# Settings

> What each setting does, and how Settings runs any action.

Open Settings with `,` (or `o`) in Rakumux mode, or the **, Settings** button in the footer. It's one
scrolling page under a search field: the settings first, then, under **Keys**, every action and its
keys. Type to narrow it to the settings and actions whose name or heading has every word you type,
such as `feed` or `restart`.

| Key | Does |
| - | - |
| Typing, `Backspace` | Search, and delete from the search |
| `↑`, `↓` | Choose a setting or an action |
| `→`, `←` | Show or hide what the selected row does |
| `Enter` (and `Space` while nothing is typed) | Change the selected setting, or run the selected action |
| `PgUp`, `PgDn`, `Home`, `End` | Move a page, or to the ends |
| `Esc` | Clear the search, then close |

## Settings

Signing in comes first, then the rest.

### Account

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Account** | Signs in to your Rakumux account, or shows who's signed in (`a`). Signed in, [AI session titles](https://docs.rakumux.com/account/ai-titles.md), the [agent feed](https://docs.rakumux.com/account/feed.md), replies and new sessions from rakumux.com, and [rtop](https://docs.rakumux.com/guides/rtop.md) there are on; there are no switches for them. See [Sign in](https://docs.rakumux.com/account/sign-in.md). |

### Appearance, keyboard and app

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Layout** | Master detail, Grid or Tabs. See [Layouts](https://docs.rakumux.com/guides/layouts.md). Phones offer Master detail and Tabs. |
| **Icons** | Marks for folders and branches: **Plain** works in any font, **Emoji** needs a colour emoji font, **Nerd Font** needs a Nerd Font set in your terminal. If a mark shows as a box, your terminal can't show it. |
| **Option+↑/↓ in sessions** | **On**: Option/Alt+↑/↓ switch sessions from inside a session too, so the program there never gets them. **Off** (the default): they switch sessions in Rakumux mode only. OpenCode, Pi and Claude Code use these keys. |
| **Update** | Shows the installed version, or a newer one that's available. `Enter` (or `U`) checks for a release, asks you to confirm, then installs it and restarts only the UI. See [Updating](https://docs.rakumux.com/installation.md#updating). |
| **Restart UI** | Reloads this window with the latest build (`R`). The server and every session keep running. |
| **Restart server** | Restarts the background server in place with this build (`S`), for example after an update. Sessions and their programs keep running, and every window reconnects. Shows the running server's version, and the new one when they differ. Same as `rakumux daemon restart`. |
| **rtop** | Shows rtop in the drawer beside the Feed (`t`): what this machine, Rakumux and each session's processes use now. See [rtop](https://docs.rakumux.com/guides/rtop.md). |
| **Terminal panel** | Opens a temporary shell below the main detail (`T`). See [Terminal panel](https://docs.rakumux.com/guides/terminal-panel.md). |

## Keys

Below the settings, Settings lists every Rakumux mode action with its keys, and `Enter` runs the
selected one, so you can use it as a command menu. The same list is on
[Keyboard and mouse](https://docs.rakumux.com/guides/keyboard-and-mouse.md).

## Settings in the config file

A few settings live only in `~/.rakumux/config.json`, such as the Rakumux key, the session cycle keys
and the AI naming keys. See [Configuration](https://docs.rakumux.com/reference/configuration.md).
